What actually needs to be in a quick-fix kit, and what's overkill?

Split it into two levels. For every week: four to six safety pins in different sizes, two spare hair elastics, a couple of bobby pins, and one hairnet. For comp or concert days, add a small sewing kit, a strip of fashion tape, nail polish remover pads, and a spare pair of tights. Laddered tights are one of the most common backstage fixes, and they're easy to forget.

If you only add one extra item this term, make it the sewing kit. It covers more emergencies than people expect: a popped popper, a loose ribbon, a hem that's come down five minutes before you're on.

Bun nets and hairnets: how do I pick the right one?

Match the net to hair colour and bun size. Mad Ally nets are the studio-standard option across most Australian schools, and they come in fine and standard options: fine for fine or thin hair, standard if your hair is thick or your bun needs extra security mid-class.

While you are setting up, make sure you match the net with the right ripple pins, they are an absolute must when making a bun. They come in both 4.5cm and 6cm sizes; if your pins are constantly visible through the net, it means they are too long for your bun size and you need to drop down a size. Headbands, scrunchies, or hair ties: what's actually worth buying?

For most classes, a couple of firm elastics for a bun and a wide headband for fringe control covers it. Where it's worth spending a bit more is on the fun stuff: Studio 7's printed scrunchies and headbands are popular with younger dancers because they double as a small reward or birthday gift, and having a few in the kit means there's always a spare when one snaps or goes missing (which happens often with younger siblings around).

What about lanyards and jewellery for comp days?

Lanyards are worth having for multi-day eisteddfods where dancers need to carry a competitor pass, and they have to hang it around their neck for backstage access. Clipping it to a bag when not in use means it doesn't get left in a change room. For jewellery, check your studio's dress code before buying: most require small stud earrings only, so it's worth keeping a spare pair in the kit in case the ones being worn don't meet the rules on the day.
